Help the Environment Whilst Trekking

Today I was reading a fascinating article about a couple who have traveled the world over the last 12 months and felt that they wanted to do at least 1 days’ volunteering each week.

When it came to hiking to Everest Base Camp, the couple decided that a great way to improve the environment for everyone was to hike with trash bags attached to their packs. Littering is a big problem on trekking trails and educating trekkers to take their own trash away with them is an important part of any trek briefing. Still, lots of trash was collected including sweet wrappers and water bottles. Local people even joined them along the trail and helped to fill their rubbish bags!

I think this is a great idea and something that I think everyone should do for at least a one day of the trek as it is a great way for people to improve the environment that they are walking through and to help the keep the local communities free of litter.

Of course, the best thing of all would be if everybody, without fail, could take care of their own rubbish and not drop litter along the routes – more education needed I feel!

Don’t just think about the environment whilst trekking – improve it.
